We were on the road driving at 6 am headed for a final destination of Los Gatos with a few stops in between. The first included a banana and yogurt from Rays beneath the towering peak in Mount Shasta town, followed by a well-timed fuel stop joined by Cousin Rob at Am/Pm in Red Bluff. Rob pointed out the PCT trail on the nearby range as we showed him the new upholstery job the Dorothy (Melissa’s 71 VW bus) received on a rainy day in Southern Oregon. We laughed and told Rob we had been eyeing the trail since we crossed it 2 and a half hours prior atop Siskiyou Pass just before the California border. We arrived in Carmichael around 12:30 and were greeted by my good pal JT and his dad Rod who were working on the dishwasher they recently installed. We ate some of our favorite sandwiches from Safeway deli, a definite in-town go-to food item. Melissa and I both have our favorite “build your own” and we both agree Safeway’s sandwiches are not the same without there unique garlic-herb spread.
From Carmichael we headed East to my hometown Jackson. We spent a couple hours catching up with my pops and enjoying some good ol’ Smith home cookin’. The dogs were so excited to see us and they both were looking spiffy and their recent haircuts. The final leg of the marathon driving push was made in my “trusty ferrari.” Obviously, as an outdoor educator, I don’t have a real ferrari, plus why would I want to spend all that money on fuel? this baby gets 34 mph, not bad for a 1993. Melissa and I enjoyed the sunset and we arrived in Los Gatos around 8:30 after around 500 miles of sitting and knitting in Melissa’s case. We are happy to be back in the warm spring weather and looking forward to an exciting weekend in San Luis Obispo. Next week we are gearing up and preparing our resupply packages. Happy St Patrick’s Day!
