We just wanted to write a quick hello! We are so excited to reach this milestone! It is hard to wrap our minds around the pristine beauty of the deepest lake in the US at 1,932 ft (7th deepest in the world!).
Below is an excerpt from the PCT guidebook:
“The lake is one of the world’s youngest, having begun to fill just after the demise of Mt. Mazama and reaching it’s present level by around 5000B.C. Mt Mazama was a large volcano that was born about 1/2 million years ago. It is believed it reached a height of 11-12000 ft! … Mt mazama self destructed about 5700 bc and it’s eruption wAs about 40 times more voluminous than when mt st Helens erupted in 1980…. Mt ranier 280 miles away was covered in 3 inches of it! The eruption took place at night, according to an ancient Klamath Native Amrican legend, and morning’s light revealed a huge gaping hole – a caldera.”
We were able to sleep along the rim of the lake last night Under a sky sparkling with stars. Off we go now for another 30 mile day of hiking.
