Melissa @smilingsoil here 👋🏻 As the suppor Melissa @smilingsoil here 👋🏻

As the support teammate in @onewaterrace, a massive weight is placed on our shoulders to set the course for our teammates. When we receive maps at the start of each stage, we have to make instant decisions to figure out the best path forward before directing our teammates to keep moving with maps you've notated.

I let Justin know exactly where he is on the map, and then he navigates on land using the route I created to find me on the other side of an island where I ask our boat captain to drive to. Sometimes what takes just 15 minutes to run across may take about the same for the boat to get to, as it weaves around the islands. There's no breaks - just constant tasks at hand to keep the team moving fast across this archipelago.

Taking on the support role in One Water Race is the most challenging race experience I have done yet. Unlike an ultra run where your course is set and you can shut off your brain for the most part, in this race you are setting the course for these athletes, navigating them from island to island via shooting bearings day and night, taking care of each of them prepping liquid calories/hot meals/gels, and coordinating with a team of captains you met just 12 hours prior to the race to make sure you can access the islands you set for your team's course. And you're doing this with no sleep.

It's a wild, exhausting, and stressful position to be in. Yet this year was so much fun and I loved seeing Justin, Beek @beekagram, and Kayla @kkobelin absolutely shine out there. They are incredibly strong athletes and it's been an honor to help them race this beautiful maze of islands.

In my heart I still know we can get to that lighthouse!

Love the family this race has created and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of it.

Tack! ❤️
Melissa

So much of being an educator is showing up and wil So much of being an educator is showing up and willing to have some hard conversations. Teaching Middle School requires patients, holding firm fair and consistent boundaries, and loving with all your heart. I, by no means, have mastered any of this, but I do share a passion, along with so many other educators, of serving kids, providing a safe space to struggle, and a desire to provide hope and inspiration for our future leaders. This year was filled with so many challenges. In the end, the climate and culture of our RHMS Bobcat family, led by amazing leaders, and filled with incredible students, got me through the tough times. Last week was a reminder of why I do this job. I'm still in tears from the thoughtful notes, bouquet of flowers, chocolate cake, funny TikToks, class photos, and kind hugs. I will never forget my year as a bobcat. Once a bobcat always a bobcat, and as I wrote, in many students yearbook, and remind myself every day, hard things are worth doing!
